Can You Still Get Sick in the Summer?: Our Guide
Several people believe sickness temporarily evaporates for society when the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and all of the fun vacations are being experienced. However, this is not entirely true. Regardless of the winter months ending, people are still becoming sick and require medical attention. Thankfully, CareHive’s services are open year-round to our partner clients and their members, 24/7/365. Read on to learn more about some of the summer illnesses you may experience if you’re not careful this summer.
Mosquito & Tick-Borne Illnesses
Mosquitos and ticks love the summer weather just as much as you and your family do. For this reason, you’ll often find them frolicking amongst your favorite areas of summer fun: swimming pools, lakes, grassy parks, etc…; all waiting to bite you or any other mammal they can land on. The problem with mosquitos and ticks is they tend to be the most common bugs in summer and they tend to carry the most diseases. Malaria and Lyme Disease are two which are notoriously associated with mosquitos and ticks. Here in America, malaria is much less common than Lyme Disease, yet it’s still cause for concern if you’re in a heavily mosquito-saturated area. Lyme Disease is a disease which may unfortunately last for life depending on the initial infection, your immune system, and a number of other factors involved. Prevention is key when dealing with mosquitos and ticks. Finding a nice, natural bug spray can do wonders for you and your family’s health. Make it a habit to spray your arms, legs, and neck when goofy out and about. When you’re swimming, don’t hesitate to give your whole body a spray if you happen to be on a shaded lake with trees and woods; this is the perfect area for mosquitos to flourish.
Swimmer’s Ear occurs when you are swimming, and swimming, and swimming all throughout summer and before you know it, due to the prolonged exposure to waters of all kinds; you have a very painful ear infection. You’ll most likely have to visit a doctor and be prescribed an antibiotic to help fight the infection. This may take about a week to two weeks to heal up.
Summer colds can simply pop up from time to time and it may have to do with a weakened immune system with everything from a sunburn, too much partying the night before, or just a weakened immune system from the springtime.
Heat rashes, poison ivy rashes, folliculitis; the list goes on when it comes to summertime rashes. The best way to prevent the above three is to avoid high heat areas, avoid areas known for their poison ivy and refer to the old saying: “leaves of three, leave them be…”, and maintain cleanliness throughout all areas of your body to ensure an excess amount of bacteria doesn’t build up over time with your accelerated sweat levels during the warmer months.
Due to increase in temperatures, there will certainly be an increase in food-borne related illnesses. We hate to say it, yet the truth is, in the restaurant industry; mistakes are made from time to time. You won’t ever want to wish food poisoning on your worst enemy after you’ve suffered from a bout of it. A great way to ensure the food you’re eating is prepared properly is to take a look around the establishment. Does the environment seem clean? Are the workers professional and clean as well? Does your food smell “funny”? All of these types of questions can be applied to your restaurant experiences and allow you to enjoy the summer without having to sacrifice up to a week if you have extremely bad food poisoning.
Due to higher amounts of allergens in the air (summer tends to bring out AQI issues); you’ll often find the air quality index score to not be as favorable during other months. In Texas you’ll come to discover the air to be thick and the humidity to increase to 100% at times. This type of air quality is further diminished when you have a wide variety of allergens floating through the air which may ultimately trigger asthmatic conditions.
